Reflecting on Artistic Approaches to Place-based Environmental Education
In this talk, Dr. Jeff Stickney shares aspects of his eco-pedagogy, offering recommendations on how to conduct place-based environmental education through the use of drawing activities in-person and online. Referring to Michael Bonnett’s (2020) work on ecologising education, Jeff explains how incorporating aesthetic dimensions contributes to more ecstatic and emplaced engagement with landscapes, as a different way of being-with and seeing/regarding differently non-human beings/creatures like notable tress. Adding in arts-based learning does not reduce place-based learning to this one aspect, but rather enriches the whole experience and composition -- along with many other lenses within a cross-disciplinary and genealogical approach to urban/rural settings.
