First Nations Principles of OCAP® Presentation

Join the Indigenous Educational Research Centre (IERC) in learning the First Nations Principles of OCAP® from Eva Keeshig, Program Officer with the First Nations Information Governance Centre. This presentation introduces participants to the First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC), the First Nations principles of OCAP® and First Nations data sovereignty.

Over the virtual one-hour presentation, participants will learn about OCAP® and have the opportunity to ask questions in a Q&A period at the end of the presentation. The presentation will not be recorded so make sure to attend live!

What is OCAP®?

The First Nations principles of ownership, control, access, and possession – more commonly known as OCAP® – assert that First Nations have control over data collection processes, and that they own and control how this information can be used. OCAP® is a tool to support strong information governance on the path to First Nations data sovereignty. Given the diversity within and across Nations, the principles will be expressed and asserted in line with a Nation’s respective world view, traditional knowledge, and protocols.

Who is the First Nations Information Governance Centre?

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) is an independent, apolitical, and technical non-profit organization operating with a special mandate from the Assembly of First Nations’ Chiefs-in-Assembly. The FNIGC oversee data collection on First Nations reserves and in northern communities, conducts research, engages in knowledge translation and dissemination activities, offers education and training, and promotes the advancement of the First Nations principles of OCAP®.
