To everyone at the OISE community:

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those who submitted their proposals to present at the 2020 OISE Graduate Students Research Conference. Even though we are unable to proceed with the conference on the originally scheduled dates of April 4-5, 2020, we would still like to support the exchange of ideas to the extent possible. That is why we decided to publish this book of abstracts to showcase all the accepted proposals[1] for the conference. Where possible, we have also included email addresses for the authors. We encourage you to read these abstracts and reach out to the authors whose research interests you.

With over 100 submissions, the task of reviewing all the submissions was admirably carried out by our team of volunteer reviewers, patiently coordinated by Annie Luk. In addition to the peer reviews completed by each of those who submitted their proposals, we were also fortunate enough to have the support from a group of volunteer reviewers who did multiple reviews. We thank you!

We also want to express our thanks to the volunteer coordinators: Charlotte Hopkins (registration), Asia Majeed (logistics), Annie Luk (programming), Latifa Soliman (communications) and You Zhang (publications).

Until we see you all at a later date, we wish you and your loved ones good health.

[1] We are only able to print the abstracts from authors who have given us written permission by May 31, 2020.

Dear all,

First, we would like to thank everyone for their interest and support for the 20th OISE Graduate Student Research Conference.

In light of the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, U of T’s directives to cancel in-person classes, and our responsibility toward the OISE and larger community, we have come to the collective decision to no longer hold the Graduate Student Research Conference on April 04-05, 2020. After careful deliberation and consultation with the
OISE Dean’s office, we are considering the conference to be postponed to a later date in the coming 2021 year.

We would like to thank you all for sharing your wonderful ideas and work. We received proposal submissions for
more than 100 paper presentations, 12 posters, and 11 workshops. We had organized for a wonderful lineup of speakers, keynotes, and panelists from diverse backgrounds and were looking forward to sharing with you all, some critical conversations and discussions on the “Futures of Education”.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the amazing team of volunteers who reviewed the proposals and were working on developing the conference program, and the committee coordinators for all the time and labour they have put into the conference thus far. We look forward to resuming this work at a more suitable time.

Once again, we truly appreciate the support from the OISE community and encourage you all to continue these critical and important conversations on imagining more just, sustainable, and equitable ‘futures’.

We hope to be able to reconnect with you all over the course of the next few months. In the meantime, please feel free to get in touch with any questions or inquiries. On a more personal note, please take care of yourselves and those around you during these uncertain times, and remember the collective responsibility we share in this situation.

With best wishes for a happier and healthier spring,

Shirin Haghgou, Leping Mou & Norin Taj, Co-Chairs

2020 OISE Graduate Student Research Conference

@OISE_GSRC

Welcome to the Virtual Graduate Student Research Conference 2021: Taking Stock and (Re)imagining the Futures of Education

The OISE Graduate Student Research Conference (GSRC) 2021 is being organized under unprecedented conditions. The world continues to grapple with the impact of COVID-19, and we are all coming to terms with a new reality informed by the conditions of a pandemic. These conditions have highlighted what many have been experiencing, theorizing, and studying for decades – that inequity and injustice exist, and that they are experienced differently.

Though the GSRC 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we published an abstract book of accepted papers and created a platform for accepted workshops to be presented in the Fall semester. The cancellation of the GSRC 2020 also provided us with an opportunity to pause and think through and to embrace new approaches to learning and research, and foster interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars, researchers, and practitioners.

Now, marking the twenty-first year of the conference, and more than ever before, we feel that the conditions of the world necessitate a (re)imagining of ways to think through how we teach, how we learn, and how we organize ourselves to not only overcome, but to transform the current conditions of the world, toward one that is grounded in principles of equity, peace, justice, and sustainability. It is with this in mind that we invite you to participate in the 20th, and first-ever virtual, OISE vGSRC 2021- Taking Stock and (Re)Imagining the Futures of Education.

The OISE GSRC is an interdisciplinary academic conference, organized with the intention of creating opportunities for graduate students to share their research/work, and network with educational leaders, the broader OISE community, peer groups, and alumni. The GSRC has historically created a space to provide an opportunity for budding researchers to share and discuss their original scholarly or research contributions while gaining experience in a formal academic conference. We remain committed to recreating this very space, in a virtual format, to provide a platform to reflect on and celebrate the progressive, innovative, and ground-breaking education related research and practice of the OISE community.

The conference will be held virtually on March 5-7, 2021 and we are looking forward to your participation!
