Meet our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Nimmi Gowrinathan

Nimmi Gowrinathan is an activist, writer, and scholar and founder of the Politics of Sexual Violence Initiative where she directs, Beyond Identity: A Gendered Platform for Scholar-Activists at the City College of New York, the Publisher of Adi Magazine, and the creator of the Female Fighter Series at Guernica Magazine. Her book, Radicalizing Her (Beacon Press 2021), examines the politics of the female fighter. She is also a senior scholar at the University of California Berkeley's Political Conflict, People's Rights and Gender Initiative. Her political essays, which have appeared in Harper's Magazine, Freeman's Journal, McSweeney's Quarterly, Guernica Magazine, and Foreign Affairs, among others have been described as "searing in a search for answers" (Publisher's Weekly).

As a contribution to this year’s Graduate Student Research Conference themes of critical conversations, the Centre for Learning, Social Economy and Work (CLSEW) is excited to host two events over the weekend.

On March 22nd from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, join Special Guest Dr. Michael Bernhard for an event titled Learning, dialectics and subjectivity: Jean Lave in Conversation with Peter Sawchuk.Jean Lave will sit down with OISE Professor Peter Sawchuk to discuss her latest insights into future of approaches to a critical politics of learning as changing practice.The event will be followed by a dinner reception sponsored by the CLSEW. 

On March 23rd from 9:00 – 10:30 am, join CLSEW for the Annual Jack Quarter Lectureship on Social Economy titled “Solidarity Economies, Direct Democracy, and Lifelong Learning: Lessons from Argentina with Guest Speaker Dr. Ana Inés Heras.

The Centre for Media and Culture in Education (CMCE) is ecstatic sponsor a Highlighted Panel titled “Surveillance, Saviorism, and “Care”: Challenging Nationalist Educational Policies and Teacher Practices through Media-Based Resistance.” 

On March 23rd from 9:00 – 10:30 am join Dr. Niyousha Bastani, Sarah Ázeline, and Abarna Selvarajah as they discuss how educational policies and teacher practices across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom shape specific nationalist discourses that produce and reproduce racial violence.

The Comparative, International & Development Education Centre’s (CIDEC) Gender and Education Special Interest Group is happy to present a Highlighted Panel titled: Students and Faculty in Conversation: ‘Slow Spaces’ and Community Building in Academia.

Held on March 23rd from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm this roundtable uniquely blends reflective exploration with a focus on the transformative potential of “slow spaces” within graduate institutions. Panellists—members of the Gender and Education Interest Group (G & E IG)—will share their perspectives on understanding gender, education, and comparative international development, reflecting on their entry into the dynamic conversation and fostering an inclusive environment where participants are encouraged to contribute their thoughts.
