The management and lived experience of the bilingual workplace in Wales - a critical discursive policy approach

In this talk, I will engage with the multiple ways Welsh‐English bilingual workplaces are managed and experienced in the context of an overtly socially equitable bilingual agenda. Using the sociolinguistic lens of critical language policy, I explore several layers of language policy as powerful mechanisms, discourses, practices and ideologies. Together, these layers contribute to unpack how social and linguistic inequities, latent or manifest power dimensions and ideologies work within the use of language, and which ramifications this has on workplace policy, agency and wider social practices.

Elisabeth Barakos is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for English Business Communication at Vienna University of Economics and Business. She has recently completed her PhD thesis under the supervision of Ute Smit and Brigitta Busch. The thesis examined the promotion of corporate bilingualism in Wales from a critical language policy angle. She received her first degree in English and Spanish language, literature and linguistics from the University of Vienna, with study visits at Manchester University and Lancaster University. Previous to that, she worked at the Council of Europe for the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, completed the CILT (The National Centre for Languages) Graduate Teacher Programme in London and taught German and Spanish at a secondary school in England. Her current interests lie in the interconnection between English as a lingua franca and multilingualism in contexts of urban multiculturalism, migration and the global‐local dialectic.
