Reciprocal learning.

Given that genomics research can be a tool of interest to Indigenous communities, the Summer Internship for Indigenous Peoples in Genomics (SING) aims to promote and sponsor Indigenous peoples to pursue occupations and careers related to genomics and the sciences, in general. They work towards capacity-building for Indigenous people and facilitating expression of Indigenous voices and perspectives on genomic research. During the summer internship, which is fully funded by the organization, participants are immersed in the basics of genomics, bioinformatics, and bioethics through an Indigenous and decolonial lens, creating space for participants to combine their own experiences, cultures, and knowledge with new learnings in genomics.

The project has a strong commitment to respecting and engaging with Indigenous values and concerns within the field of science and technology studies.

Through the summer internship and educational materials provided to participants, SING promotes Indigenous presence and leadership in the field of genomics as well as ethical research values that focus on capacity building and community engagement.

Laboratory practices, notes, and observations.

Academic research on genomics, and Indigenous knowledges and methods.

The experiences from each summer internship are documented and shared through the website of each regional version of the project (Australia, Aotearoa, Canada, and United States).
