Sarah Dias
Program: Master of Education in Counselling Psychology
Expected year of graduation: 2025
What led you to apply to APHD at OISE?
I did my undergraduate degree in psychology and have always been passionate about the mental health and well-being of others. I wanted to continue my education to become a psychotherapist. I knew some folks who had attended OISE for Counselling Psychology and had a wonderful experience.
What was your past experience like?
Right before starting this program, I was working in the UK as a teaching assistant for children with learning disabilities. Before that, I worked for over a year in a subsidized apartment building in Mississauga, supporting over 70 tenants with mental health concerns as well as creating social events for tenants to build connections with one another.
Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
Getting into this program is something I am very proud of. On top of that, I moved to the UK alone at the start of 2023, and then back to Toronto in the fall to start this program. Transitioning to a new country and then back to being a student and all that comes with that is something I am proud to have experienced and adjusted to.
What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at OISE?
I am thankful for the supports that exist within OISE. All of my professors have been incredibly understanding and supportive and you can tell that they care about you and your professional development. As well, I love making connections with peers in my cohort and attending different events at OISE.
What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
I would say Leslieville is probably my favourite thing about Toronto. As I just moved here recently, I feel like I still have a lot to explore, but I love wandering Queen St. East and checking out all the shops or reading in a cute café.
What does your “weekend” typically look like?
My weekends are constantly changing! I do try to take some time for myself to rest and recharge but I also spend time catching up on assignments or working at my job. I also always try to spend some time with family and friends over the weekend or try to explore a new spot in Toronto.
What are some of your hobbies & interests?
I love to travel, read, walk, and journal. Also a huge Taylor Swift fan and have been to almost every Taylor Swift-related event in the city.
What is your favourite type of cuisine?
I like so many, I don’t think I could pick just one. I love Indian, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian.
Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
After I finish my degree, I see myself working as a Psychotherapist, probably within a community or agency setting at first, with the hopes of going into private practice afterwards. I am still developing specific interests, but have an interest in trauma as well as somatic approaches which I would love to incorporate into my practice.
