OISE's 3rd Annual Equity Symposium, Mobilizing Our Knowledge to Defend Justice Outside the Walls of University, is an important gathering of faculty, scholars, activists, and community leaders in conversation about strategies for real-world advocacy.
Attendees will engage in thought-provoking discussions on equity and justice, led by expert panelists and keynote speakers who are driving meaningful change.
This symposium is also an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and walk away with actionable strategies to advocate for justice in classrooms, institutions, and communities.
This year's keynote speaker is Professor Maydianne Andrade, Special Advisor to the OISE Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

About the Speaker

Maydianne Andrade
Maydianne Andrade is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). With a PhD in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University, Dr. Andrade’s award-winning research focuses on how ecological and social contexts affect animal diversity. She is a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society (ABS), and of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS), and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Council of Canadian Academies. Her many research awards and distinctions include a Canada Research Chair in Integrative Behavioural Ecology, election as an Honorary International member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the Lawrence J. Burpee medal for outstanding contributions and science leadership (RCGS), and the Exemplar award for sustained contributions to the study of animal behaviour (ABS).
Professor Andrade’s scholarly focus includes knowledge translation supporting the implementation of principles of equity in academia, for which she received the Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize from the University of Toronto Alumni Association in 2021. In 2016, she founded the Toronto Initiative for Diversity and Excellence (TIDE).
