Welcome to the Centre for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education

Centre for Science, Mathemtics & Technology Education

The Centre for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMT) at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, was established in 1999. Our members work collaboratively to advance science, mathematics, and technology (SMT) education, as well as other cross-disciplinary fields such as engineering. We are a scholarly community welcoming graduate students wanting to pursue an emphasis in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education or a specialization in Engineering Education.

"We strive to undertake research, development, and teaching that promote critical understanding, inclusion, diversity, equity, personal well-being, creativity, and social and environmental justice in all areas of science, mathematics and technology."

Our March meeting will be dedicated to Dr. Nick Wasserman's presentation. This talk discusses the potential role of particular kinds of mathematical practices - i.e., pedagogical mathematical practices - in efforts to improve teacher preparation experiences. Dr. Wasserman reports on a study with secondary teachers that identifies four such practices that might be incorporated into university mathematics coursework.
